Cloning a BMW DME involves reading the required data from the original ECU and transferring it to a compatible donor unit. For the BMW MSD81.2 DME, Launch X431 X-PROG5 can work with X431 ECU Clone software to complete the data reading and cloning process.

What You Need
The main tool used for this procedure is the Launch X431 X-PROG5 (PROG5/G5). The programmer connects to a PC via USB and works with the corresponding software for ECU data reading, backup, and programming.
BMW MSD81.2 DME Cloning
1. Read the Original DME EEPROM, FLASH Data and ISN
Connect X-PROG5 key programmer to a PC using a USB cable, then launch the corresponding X431 ECU Clone software.
Select [BMW] → [MSD81.2 TC1796] → [Bench Mode]
The software will display the corresponding wiring diagram for the operation.
Connect the Launch G5 to the original DME using the dedicated wiring harness according to the wiring diagram.

After establishing communication with the DME, read the chip ID first. Then read and save the original EEPROM and FLASH data separately as backup files.

Next, read the ISN data from the original DME.

2. Write the Original Data to the Donor DME
Connect Launch X431 X-PROG5 programmer to the compatible donor DME.

In the X431 ECU Clone software, select the original DME’s EEPROM and FLASH data that were backed up previously, then write the data to the donor DME.

After writing is completed, read the ISN from the donor DME and compare it with the ISN from the original unit.
The two ISN values are identical, confirming that the required data has been transferred successfully.

Result
The BMW DME MSD81.2 cloning procedure was completed successfully using the Launch X431 X-PROG5 key programmer.
In addition, Launch X431 IMMO Plus/Elite with X-PROG3 also supports BMW MSD81.2 DME cloning.
